Let them eat couture!

Painter Will Cotton expresses a very sweet fantasy world inhabited by actress Elle Fanning for New York Magazine's Spring Fashion 2013 Issue.  All the clothes -- and food! -- are real.... I find this a sinfully delicious combination of some of my favorite things: fashion, art, beauty and, of course, petit fours!

Jaipur at Holi & Elephant Festival Time.... Maybe the prettiest holiday on the planet

Is there any more beautiful and colorful celebration on Earth than Holi in Jaipur?  I don't know....   I only hope the elephants don't mind their couture and make-up.  I saw one painted like this last March when I was in Goa and he (or she?) seemed pretty content.

Head Games

Hair jewelry! I insist this runway trend be here to stay and I take personal responsibility to rock it in a wearable way.  These gems are a staple in the definition of how to be postmodern royalty-- every queen  or princess needs a crown after all.  I love the east meets west vibe too, because fashion 2013 is all about a global sense of style.

The keys to unlocking the way to make this look work are dark, black eyeliner and even more attitude.  For inspiration think Nicole Richie, Aishwarya Rai, Marie Antoinette and 20s flappers.....

Modern haute boho

This is how to work bohemian like true postmodern royalty.  Photography by Hans Withoo, I find typifies the haute hippie of my soul: sultry, mysterious, chic and with a laissez faire attitude.  Everything about these photos is unexpected and full of life.  Each one tells a story of love, sadness and navigation through wonderful danger of life, but always with beauty and style.

Happy Holi, Royals!

Retro, stripes and macrame

Dolce and Gabbana for summer, s'il vous plait!  I love all the fun quirkiness about these outfits.  They seem to have traveled here from a time when bathing suits were more modest and clothes were more well-made.... Pompoms, macrame, stripes....  This line took the best parts of beachwear from the last century, added some updated hemlines and '13 worthy shoes.... and I guess what I'm saying is:               I WANT! I WANT! I WANT!

Printed suits? ....Yes.

While out shopping for my new spring wardrobe I found myself paused in front of an all-over printed blazer and bottom set, and I thought.... should I?  My inclination for my actual (not fantasy wish-list) wardrobe is to stay simple, classic and make sure it fits perfectly.  So, those things considered, the answer is: Yes. The same rules apply to this new trend, which I believe is here to stay, but we must choose carefully.

The trick is to go with a print that works for you and your personality.  We don't want you looking like a trend victim....Your floral suit should be just that.  If you generally wear preppy clothes, go with a lighter color, airier floral.  If you are more of a vamp, find one which is dark and sultry, with some shine in the fabric.

The good news is, there are so many options at every price point, you are bound to find the one which "suits" you (sorry, couldn't resist).  Final thought: As spring and summer begin, and Fridays and Mondays become unofficially, more optional, these suits will be my best friend.  Worn together to work, all I need is an overnight bag, white t-shirt, pair of solid shorts, killer sling-back mules, bikini et voilĂ ! Weekend bound!  Suits, in order, by: Celine, Tory Burch, Warehouse, Roberto Cavalli, Christian Louboutin, and Marc Jacobs.
